Michael obtained their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Instructional Psychology and Technology from Brigham Young University, where they studied from 2009 to 2017. Prior to that, they pursued a Master of Science in Education (MSED) with a focus on Instructional Systems Technology at Indiana University Bloomington from 2005 to 2006.

In 2004, Michael Atkisson also had a period of study at Brigham Young University, where they focused on Instructional Psychology and Technology, although the specific degree obtained during this time is unknown. Their earlier education includes a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Spanish Language and Literature from the University of Utah, which they earned from 2000 to 2003.
