Saarah Jappie, PhD, is a senior academic and program officer with extensive experience in history and social science research. Currently serving as a Senior Program Officer for the Mellon Mays Graduate Initiatives Program at the Social Science Research Council since January 2023, Saarah has previously held the position of Program Officer for the Transregional Collaboratory on the Indian Ocean and the Arts Research with Communities of Color (ARCC) programs from October 2019 to June 2022. Prior experience includes a role as a Lecturer at the University of the Witwatersrand and an Associate Lecturer at the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies. Educational qualifications include a Doctor of Philosophy in History from Princeton University, a Master of Arts in History from the University of Cape Town, and a Bachelor of International Studies with a focus on Indonesian/Malay languages, French language and literature, and linguistics from UNSW.
