Rafael Bessa - P.Eng., M.Eng.

Rafael Bessa is a professional engineer with a Master's degree in Engineering. Rafael has a range of experience in various engineering roles.

Starting in 2020, Rafael worked as a Project Engineer at Solaris MCI. Prior to that, they worked at Allnorth Consultants Limited from 2018 to 2020, where they served as a Project Manager. In this role, they were responsible for project delivery and the preparation of engineering designs for industrial facilities. Rafael also coordinated project resources and communicated project progress.

Before their time at Allnorth, Rafael worked at Metro Vancouver (formerly GVRD) from 2017 to 2018, where they served as an Assistant Project Engineer and a Post-graduate Co-op Energy Management Engineer.

From 2011 to 2016, Rafael worked at PETROBRAS, a leading oil and gas company in Brazil. There, they served as a Production Process Engineer and was responsible for various process engineering activities, including detailed design, commissioning, and operation of oil production units. Rafael also conducted process troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and management of change projects. Additionally, they monitored the plant's environmental performance and provided technical leadership in report submittals to regulators.

Rafael's early career includes a role as a Process Engineering Intern at Praxair, Inc from 2009 to 2011, where they conducted process simulations, analyzed work performance data, and developed business cases for projects. Rafael also worked as a Research Assistant at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 2007, where they developed a kinetic model for the hydrolysis of biomass material. Prior to that, they worked as a Chemistry Teaching Assistant at Colégio Santa Mônica RJ from 2006 to 2007.

Rafael Bessa holds a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, which they completed between the years 2006 and 2011 with a grade of 8.0 out of 10.0. Rafael then pursued further education at Petrobras University from 2011 to 2012, earning a degree in Process Engineering with a GPA of 3.72 out of 4.00, focusing on upstream operations. Seeking to enhance their knowledge in the field, Bessa completed their Master of Engineering in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at The University of British Columbia from 2016 to 2018. Additionally, they have obtained several certifications, including the Professional Engineer (PE) designation from Engineers and Geoscientists BC in June 2019. Rafael also holds certifications in "Think Again: How to Reason and Argue" from Coursera, obtained in November 2013, and "CBSP/ BST 1512- Curso Básico de Segurança em Plataforma/Offshore Basic Safety Training" from Instituto de Ciências Náuticas - ICN, obtained in March 2012.
