Brian Monakali

Brian Monakali has a diverse work experience spanning various industries and roles. Brian is currently working as the Director of Energy and Logistics Strategy at South32, where they are responsible for developing a decarbonization strategy and implementing a logistics strategy to support business growth. Prior to this, Brian held the position of Head of Strategy and Business Improvement at South32, where they coordinated the implementation of the company's vision and strategy and spearheaded the implementation of their operating system.

Before joining South32, Brian worked at Transnet Freight Rail, where they held several management positions. As the General Manager of Safety and Security, they drove the development of a safety and security strategy and introduced preventative measures to safeguard assets and employees. Brian also served as the General Manager of Rail Network Infrastructure, where they managed the division's budget and led a team of employees and contractors. Additionally, Brian held roles such as General Manager of Capital Planning and Executive Manager of Strategy and Long Term Planning.

Prior to their time at Transnet, Brian worked at Lonmin Plc, where they held various senior management positions. Brian was responsible for corporate strategy planning, identifying new business opportunities, and conducting competitor analysis. Brian also played a key role in implementing Lean Six Sigma programs and improving operational efficiency across multiple plants.

Brian's early work experience includes roles at Unilever as a Control Engineer and at the Municipality of Port Elizabeth as a System Operations Engineer and Design Engineer. At Unilever, they focused on managing capital projects and developing and maintaining equipment standards. At the Municipality, Brian was responsible for the control and planning of the electricity supply network.

Brian Monakali completed their Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering at the University of Cape Town from 1995 to 1998. Brian later pursued a Master of Engineering degree in Industrial Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand from 2001 to 2002. Finally, they obtained an MBA degree in Finance & Strategy from the University of the Witwatersrand from 2005 to 2007.
