Ethan Chiou

Senior Device Software Engineer at SPAN

Ethan Chiou has a diverse range of work experience in the technology industry. Ethan is currently serving as a Senior Device Software Engineer at Span, a position they have held since August 2020.

Prior to their current role, Ethan worked as a Firmware Engineer at Samsara from August 2019 to May 2020. During their time at Samsara, they focused on streamlining industrial automation through work on cloud-connected embedded Linux gateways. Ethan also played a key role in enabling and enhancing communication with third-party industrial devices, bringing new hardware products to production, and improving the reliability of devices' networking connectivity. Ethan was responsible for defining project priorities and managing firmware workflows to meet and exceed customer needs while working closely with the Sales and Product teams.

Before joining Samsara, Ethan worked at Mindtribe Product Engineering as an Associate Firmware Engineer from August 2017 to August 2019. In this role, they played a vital role in bringing client products from prototypes to mass production by leading firmware efforts for project teams. Ethan effectively collaborated with product designers, electrical and mechanical engineers, and project managers to develop consumer products.

Ethan's professional journey began as an Undergraduate Research Assistant at UC Berkeley from May 2015 to May 2017. During their time at UC Berkeley, they assisted in Human-Centered Design research for Professor Eric Paulos and co-authored an Honorable Mention-awarded paper at a Human-Computer Interaction conference.

In addition to their work at Mindtribe Product Engineering and UC Berkeley, Ethan also gained valuable experience as a Firmware Engineering Intern at Mindtribe Product Engineering from May 2016 to July 2016. Ethan also worked as a Software Engineering Intern at bebop.co, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc, from May 2014 to August 2014. In this role, Ethan designed, prototyped, and developed user-side applications using AngularJS and Express.

Ethan Chiou completed their high school education at Lynbrook High School from 2009 to 2013. Following this, they pursued a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering & Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley, from 2013 to 2017.
