The Role

Why it’s important: We aim to provide our customers with information (data, analytics, insights) on African consumers and consumer markets, empowering them to: 

  • Evaluate companies providing consumer products
  • Identify attractive consumer markets and segments for various consumer products
  • Develop winning strategies in various consumer markets and segments

We are looking for a consumer insights expert to lead our analysis of consumer behaviours, preferences, and trends across Africa. 

What it covers: The Consumer Intelligence Lead at Stears is chiefly responsible for ensuring that we adopt the right approach to collating, processing, and communicating information on African consumers and consumer markets. You will lead and/or contribute to developing Stears’ consumer information products, including datasets, reports, dashboards, and analytical models. 

As the Consumer Intelligence Lead, you will: 

  • Analyse consumer data and information across the following categories:

    • Consumer habits & behaviours
    • Consumer preferences & lifestyles
    • Consumer wealth & well-being
    • Consumer demographics
    • Consumer spending patterns & trends
  • Create short-form and long-form reports identifying, analysing, and predicting trends across African consumer markets and consumer segments.

  • Work with our internal industry domain experts to generate demand-side (consumer) insights on specific consumer markets in Africa. For example, identifying customer adoption trends in ther East African Solar PV market.

  • Provide strategic guidance on Stears’ and/or third-party primary consumer data collection projects.

  • Support Stears’ industry experts, data scientists, researchers, etc., by providing relevant frameworks, models, data, and tools for producing impactful consumer information.

  • Work with Stears’ industry experts, data scientists, researchers, etc., to develop consumer analytic models, including spending projections, predictive analysis, etc.

  • Drive the development of proprietary concepts and frameworks in consumer insights and analytics.

Required qualifications and experience:

  • At least six (6) years of experience in related roles focused on collecting, analysing, and communicating consumer insights to external stakeholders

  • Experience with any of the following:

    • Creating or using consumer segmentation frameworks
    • Developing or analysing consumer profiles
    • Developing consumer projections
    • Analysing consumer trends
  • Experience working with consumer data or consumer analysis frameworks

  • Strong data analysis skills with the ability to analyse, interpret or extract insights from data

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Evidence of strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills developed through academic or professional work

  • Problem-solving skills with the ability to analyse and structure data to meet set objectives.

  • Strong collaborative skills and can work across different cross-functional teams. In the past, you have managed complex projects and timelines effectively.

  • A proven track record of excelling in research tasks—including gathering information through stakeholder engagement—evidenced by previous experience in roles that require significant research activity.

Preferred skills & qualifications: These skills & qualifications are not necessary, but will be highly valued 

  • Academic Degrees in economics, psychology. marketing, behavioural science, and similar fields.

  • Professional certifications in market research, consumer behaviour, and related themes.

  • Academic or professional certifications in data science, data analytics, and similar fields.

  • Experience working in multinationals or multiple African countries.

  • Proficiency with statistical analysis tools or programming languages, such as R, Python, SPSS, and PowerBI.

  • Experience working on primary data collection projects, including consumer surveys, etc.
