Peter Wubbels

Peter Wubbels is the Director of Engineering at Stellar Health. Peter has over four years of experience as an engineering manager and senior staff software engineer, primarily in the area of computer assisted diagnostics (CAD) and medical imaging.

Wubbels began their career at Verily Life Sciences (formerly Google Life Sciences) in January 2016 as an engineering manager. Peter was quickly promoted to senior staff software engineer and founded the CAD team, which became a part of a high-visibility, multi-year cross-company collaboration with the Google Research team. Wubbels successfully grew the team to 30+ members before transferring the projects to Google Health in 2020.

During their time at Verily, Wubbels made significant contributions to hiring and performance management processes, as well as helping to build out cross-functional, domain-specific teams like Quality & Regulatory. Peter also participated in multiple engagements with US (FDA) & EU regulatory bodies, including experiential learning sessions, technical lectures, medical device presubmissions & audits (ISO 13485, device reviews, etc).

Under Wubbels' leadership, the team delivered Alphabet's first Class II medical device, using deep learning to assess retinal images for diabetic eye disease. The product was successfully deployed in the EU alongside HW partners as well as in India and Thailand with healthcare providers and governmental organizations.

Peter Wubbels has a Bachelor's degree in Cognitive Science and Computer Science from the University of Virginia. Peter has an unfinished Master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
