The Sunlight Foundation was founded in 2006 by two individuals with experience in the fields of government and anthropology. The organization's board of directors has a wealth of experience in various aspects of civic engagement and transparency. Members of the board have worked with organizations such as the Ford Foundation, Transparency International, and the Project On Government Oversight. The board is also educated, with degrees from institutions such as Columbia University.
