Allan S. Bufferd

Dr. Allan S. Bufferd is Treasurer Emeritus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served in various investment roles at MIT for more than 30 years, including 19 years as chief investment officer, and was the founding president of the MIT Investment Management Company in 2004. He was an ex-officio member of the governing board of MIT, serving as a member of its executive, investment, and development committees. Prior to joining MIT, he was engaged in engineering and corporate management.

Dr. Bufferd currently serves as an advisor to the Lumina Foundation and to the National University of Singapore, and to two private family offices. He is a board member of the Risk Management Foundation, a support organization to the Controlled Risk Insurance Company (“CRICO”), a medical malpractice insurer, which board he chaired for 12 years, and continues to serve CRICO as chair of its investment committee and as a member of other board committees. He is a Trustee Emeritus of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and continues his participation as a member of the BIDMC Board of Trustees Emeritus, also serving as a member of its governance committee. He currently is a member of the board of Boston Children’s Hospital and several of its board committees, including serving as the chair of its investment committee.

Dr. Bufferd has a history of serving as a board member of several public and private companies, in the U.S., Asia, and Europe; and has been actively engaged in non-profit organizations, serving as a director and Treasurer of the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and as a trustee and chair of the Investment Committee of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation; and chair of the board of Wheelock College.

Dr. Bufferd holds a Sc.D. from MIT and a J.D. from Suffolk University.
