Sarah James has a diverse work experience in the healthcare industry. Sarah started their career at NHS Direct in 2001, where they served as a Performance Manager, leading regional performance improvement initiatives. In 2007, they joined West Essex PCT as a Clinical Governance Manager. Sarah then moved on to Northern Devon Healthcare Trust in 2009, where they held the roles of Head of Quality and Safety, and later, Patient Safety Lead. During their time at Northern Devon, they played a key role in implementing patient safety and quality improvement programs and initiatives. In 2015, Sarah joined NHS Improvement as the Head of Clinical Quality, and in 2017, they became a Q Community Member at The Health Foundation. In 2018, they joined South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust as an Acting Executive Director. Currently, Sarah is serving as the Executive Director of Integrated Governance and Performance at Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust since 2023.

Sarah James completed their BSc (Hons) in Nursing from the University of Hertfordshire from 1992 to 1995. Subsequently, they pursued an MSc in Strategic Management from the University of Bristol and successfully finished it from 2009 to 2012.
