Andrew A. Ortiz is a Staff Attorney at Transgender Law Center. Prior to this, they were a Senior Staff Attorney at Legal Services NYC from September 2015 to November 2019, where they provided holistic representation to low-income HIV+ and LGBTQ Brooklyn Residents. Their primary practice areas included housing, government benefits, anti-discrimination, immigration, and health care access. Andrew collaborated with independent advocates and community-based organizations to support policy initiatives that would positively impact LGBTQ communities.
Before their time at Legal Services NYC, Andrew was a Student Attorney at Howard University Civil Rights Clinic from August 2014 to May 2015. There, they represented clients in civil rights matters and co-authored and served as lead editor for an amicus brief to the Supreme Court. Andrew also researched and drafted memoranda on various civil rights violations.
In the summer of 2014, Andrew worked as a Summer Law Clerk at NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc.. And in the winter of 2014, they were a Judicial Intern at DC Superior Court.
Andrew's first legal internship was at Employment Justice Center in May 2013 where they worked as a Legal Services Intern until August 2013.
Andrew A. Ortiz attended Howard University School of Law, where they earned their Doctor of Law (JD) degree. Prior to that, they completed a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from the University of North Texas.
