Fernando Gomes

FIFA Council at UEFA

An economics graduate, Fernando Gomes stepped down from his role of president of the Portuguese Professional Football League (LPFP) when he was elected as Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) president in December 2011.

A former basketball player and basketball league president, Gomes had a long career with FC Porto, where he began as the club's basketball director. He became a member of the Porto management board in 2000 and served in areas such as marketing, commercial and financial matters before leaving the club in February 2010.

In May 2013, Gomes was appointed as special advisor to the Executive Committee in charge of relations with all confederations, and as a UEFA EURO 2016 steering group member. In April 2015, Gomes was elected as a member of the UEFA Executive Committee, and was appointed as a UEFA vice-president in 2017. In September of the same year, he was appointed as a European member of the FIFA Council until the next Ordinary UEFA Congress, and was re-appointed for a further year at the Bratislava Congress in February 2018. Gomes was re-elected as a European FIFA Council member for the 2019-21 period at UEFA's Rome Congress in February 2019.
