Larry Burchfield was elected as District 13 Director in 2021.
An outspoken union activist with extensive experience in the oil and chemical sectors, Burchfield got his start in 1996 at Amoco’s Texas City, Texas, chemical plant. Burchfield was hired after completing a four-year machinist training program through the Department of Labor and became a member of the Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union in what is now USW Local 13-1.
In 2008, Burchfield transferred from Amoco’s chemical plant to its Texas City refinery.
As a local union member, Burchfield served as steward, health and safety chair and eventually unit vice president, leading bargaining for his group within his amalgamated local. He also served as a National Oil Bargaining Program committee member for Region E.
He became USW staff in 2015 but not before he helped lead his unit through nearly six months of a strike against Marathon as part of a successful effort to ensure a fair contract that addressed health and safety concerns, contracting out and maintaining high-quality health care benefits.
Burchfield became Assistant to the District 13 Director in 2018.
As Director, he will continue the fight against the corporations with a profit-before-safety agenda, provide resources throughout the District to help organize workers and improve workplace conditions.
A graduate of the USW’s Leadership Scholarship program who also studied at the National Labor College, Burchfield is a strong proponent of member education.
The headquarters for District 13 is in Baytown, Texas.
