Michael Liebelt

Michael Liebelt graduated from the University of Adelaide with a B.Sc. in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics in 1978, BE (Hons) in Electrical Engineering and Master of Engineering Science in 1982.

He was appointed Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Adelaide in 1989, Senior Lecturer in 1996 and Associate Professor in 2006. He was the Head of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering from 2001 until 2010 and Deputy Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Computer and Mathematical Sciences from 2010 until 2016. He was Interim Executive Dean of the Faculty of Sciences from September 2017 to September 2018.

In 1987 Michael was a founding director of Network Communications Pty. Ltd. and served on the Board, including 2 years as Chairman, until the Company was sold in 1997. He was a Director of the Electronics Industry Association of SA from 2001 until 2006, a Member of the Governing Board of the Cooperative Research Centre for Sensor Signal and Image Processing from 2003 until 2005, Director of Spire Innovations Pty. Ltd from 2003 until 2012 and Director of Aitec Pty. Ltd. from 2004 until 2005. He is currently a member of the Management Committee of Electronics Industry Development Adelaide Inc. (EIDA). He has ben the University’s representative on member of the Council of St. Ann’s College Inc. since January 2017.

Michael’s research interests are in computer architecture, particularly asynchronous digital systems and fine grained parallel architectures for implementing artificial general intelligence, and in engineering education. He has over 70 peer-reviewed publications and has supervised or co-supervised 34 PhD and Masters students to completion in these areas.

He is Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a Member of the Association for Computing Machinery and a Member of the Australasian Association for Engineering Education. He is also a member of the TEQSA Register of Experts, and Member of the Adelaide Education Academy.

In 2016 Michael was awarded the University’s Stephen Cole the Elder Award for Excellence in the category of Leadership, Support and Enhancement of Teaching Practice, and the Vice-Chancellor and President’s Award for Excellence in Learning and Teaching. In 2017 he was awarded an AAUT Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning.
