Situated in gorgeous downtown Denver, the University of Colorado, Denver campus offers its students access to a bustling city life filled with career and cultural opportunities, and an education that will prepare them to thrive in it. Offering traditional classes as well as total online courses through CU Online, the university has over 60 bachelor's degree options. Students can pursue degrees in a variety of options, like Art History, Environmental Sciences or Public Health. Master's, doctoral, certificate, health, and pre-collegiate options are also available. Admissions to the University of Colorado, Denver, are based upon multiple factors, including high school performance rates, the admission index calculated by GPA and ACT/SAT scores, and an optional personal letter of request. Eligible students generally have an index of 93 or higher and have completed all HEAR requirements, and show no more than two MAPS unit deficiencies. Tuition rates are discounted for in-state students. For financial assistance, students should begin by filling out the FAFSA. The university also offers scholarships based on need and merit, and students interested in applying for these should check out the University Scholarship Guide on the university website. Student life at the university is bound to have something for everyone. Denver is known for its vibrant atmosphere, opportunities and night life, and CU Denver is located just blocks away from the downtown. Martin Dunn is the current Dean of the College of Engineering, Design and Computing at the [University of Colorado Denver](/org/university-of-colorado-denver). From January 2015 to December 2018, they were Co Director and Professor at the SUTD Digital Manufacturing and Design Center (DManD). Prior to that, they served as the Founding Senior Research Officer and Associate Provost for Research at the [Singapore University of Technology and Design](/org/singapore-university-of-technology-and-design) (SUTD) from January 2013 to December 2018.

From January 2011 to December 2013, Dunn was a Program Director at the [National Science Foundation](/org/national-science-foundation). Martin then returned to the University of Colorado Boulder where they served as Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Chair of the Department, and Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering from January 1993 to December 2016.

Prior to their academic career, Dunn worked as a design engineer at Boeing from June 1987 to August 1988. Martin then completed a postdoctoral fellowship in solid and structural mechanics at Sandia National Laboratories from August 1992 to August 1993.

Martin Dunn

Anthony E. Graves is the current Managing Director, Partnerships & Innovation at [University of Colorado Denver](/org/university-of-colorado-denver). Anthony has also held the position of Director of External Affairs, Denver Economic Development & Opportunity at [City and County of Denver](/org/city-and-county-of-denver) from July 2013 to July 2020. In this role, they were a senior leader in Denver's economic development agency, managing external affairs strategies across the city's portfolio of economic programs. These programs included Business Development, the Division of Small Business Opportunity (DSBO), Global Business Development, Workforce Development and the Neighborhood Equity and Stabilization Team (NEST). 

As part of their role, Anthony led Denver’s Economic Equity agenda for the agency in support of the Mayor's citywide Race and Social Justice Initiative. Anthony also served as a Mayoral Appointee and administered special projects for the Mayor as requested. In addition, Anthony served on the agency's Loan Review Committee (non-voting) for the disbursement of federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to small businesses.

Anthony E. Joann Brennan is the interim co-dean of the College of Arts & Media at the [University of Colorado Denver](/org/university-of-colorado-denver). Joann has been a faculty member at the university since 1994, when they were hired as an assistant professor of photography. Joann has also taught at [Princeton University](/org/princeton) and the [University of Rhode Island](/org/university-of-rhode-island).

Joann Brennan received their Master's Degree in Photography from [Massachusetts College of Art and Design](/org/massachusetts-college-of-art-and-design). Joann also received their Bachelor's Degree in Photography from the same school. Prior to that, they graduated from Minnechaug Regional High School.

Joann Brennan

Douglas C. Sicker, PhD, has a deep background in engineering and technology. As the Chief Computing Officer, and Interim Information Strategy and Services Officer, Doug is leading CU Denver efforts to develop a campus-wide vision for interdisciplinary computing. This includes creating opportunities for broader access to programs in computational thinking, programming AI, data science and other applications of technology within higher education.

Doug is a professor of Computer Science Engineering and Electrical Engineering within the College of Engineering, Design and Computing (CEDC). Previously, he held roles at [Carnegie Mellon University](/org/carnegie-mellon-university), including serving as the Lord Endowed Chair in Engineering, Department Head of Engineering and Public Policy, director of CyLab, and professor of Computer Science. He was also the DBC Endowed Professor in the [Department of Computer Science](/org/al-farabi-kazakh-national-university) and the director of the Interdisciplinary Telecommunications Program at the [University of Colorado Boulder](/org/university-of-colorado-boulder).

Professionally, Doug has served as the chief technology officer and senior advisor for Spectrum at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, and director of global architecture at Level 3 Communications, Inc. Doug’s expertise has also been tapped by the [Federal Communications Commission](/org/federal-communications-commission) (FCC), where he served as the chief technology officer, senior advisor on the FCC National Broadband Plan, and chief of the FCC’s Network Technology Division. He has also served as an advisor to the U.S. Department of Justice, the Department of State, and to various state and city committees and councils.

As an active member of the IEEE, the ACM, [AAAS](/org/american-association-for-the-advancement-of-science) and the [Internet Society](/org/internet-society), Doug has chaired numerous conferences, and served on various program committees and National Academy studies. He has published extensively in the fields of wireless systems, cybersecurity, and network policy.

Doug Sicker

An accomplished administrator and scholar, Daniel Maxey is Chief of Staff to Chancellor Michelle Marks. He has more than 20 years of experience as an education policy scholar, a government relations practitioner, and a learner-centered higher education professional and leader. Most recently, he served as Chief of Staff at the [University of Northern Colorado](/org/university-of-northern-colorado).

Dan’s scholarly work includes grant-funded research examining the influence of changes in faculty work roles on student success and studies of higher education governing boards. An accomplished author, his numerous published works have appeared in academic journals, book chapters, white papers, and periodicals.

As chief of staff, Dan works closely with the Chancellor, senior leaders, faculty, staff, students and the greater Denver community to ensure that diverse voices are heard and represented, and to help the university address the challenges and opportunities inherent in the Strategic Plan 2030.

Deeply dedicated to equity, access, student success, and community impact, Dan’s involvement in higher education began at [Arizona State University](/org/arizona-state-university) where he served as an academic advisor. The experience shaped his understanding of what it means to be a learner-centered practitioner in education and continues to inform his passion for eliminating obstacles to student success.

Previously Dan served as chief of staff to the president and special assistant to the provost for strategic initiatives at the [University of Wyoming](/org/university-of-wyoming), and held various leadership positions at [Santa Clara University](/org/santa-clara-university), the [University of Southern California](/org/university-of-southern-california), and The College of William and Mary in Virginia. In addition, his background includes government relations positions in Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Dan earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Urban Education Policy from USC. He also holds a master’s degree in Higher and Postsecondary Education from [Arizona State University](/org/arizona-state-university), and a Bachelor of Arts with a concentration in Government from The College of William and Mary.

Daniel Maxey

Phillip De Leon, PhD serves as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Research and Chief Research Officer. In this role he leads the CU Denver efforts in elevating our research activities across a diverse array of programs, ideas, and people. This includes developing and implementing CU Denver's research strategy and associated research plan.

Phillip is a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering within the College of Engineering, Design and Computing (CEDC). Previously, he was a Professor in the Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at New Mexico State University, where he held the Nakayama Professorship in Engineering for Teaching Excellence and the Paul W. and Valerie Klipsch Distinguished Professorship. In addition, he served as Associate Dean of Research in the College of Engineering and Associate Vice President for Research and Chief Science Officer. His teaching and research experience is in the field of digital signal processing (DSP) and includes audio and speech applications, machine learning including deep learning, time-frequency signal analysis, and embedded systems and mobile application programming.

He has published extensively in the field of DSP and his research has been supported by agencies and organizations such as the Air Force Research Laboratory, Army Research Laboratory, National Science Foundation, NASA, and Sandia National Laboratories. His international research experience includes serving as visiting professor at University College Cork, Ireland; EURECOM, Sophia Antipolis, France; Paris Institute of Technology (ParisTech), France; and as a Fulbright Faculty Scholar at Vienna University of Technology (TU-Wien), Austria.

Phillip received the B.S. Electrical Engineering and the B.A. Mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Nathan Thompson is currently the Interim Co-Dean of the College of Arts & Media at the [University of Colorado Denver](/org/university-of-colorado-denver). Nathan has held various positions at the university since 2004, including Associate Professor of Music and Director of Bands.

Nathan Thompson has a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Technical Theatre/Theatre Design and Technology from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Literature from [Wheaton College](/org/wheaton).

Nathan Thompson

Monique L. Snowden, PhD, is the Senior Vice Chancellor for Strategic Enrollment and Student Success. She is an enrollment and student success strategist with 30 years of strong and varied experience attracting and supporting diverse student populations. Over the course of her 25-year career in higher education, she has served in key academic and student affairs administrator positions at Texas A&M University, Northwestern University, and most recently Fielding Graduate University, a private nonprofit institution in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Monique began her career as a business analyst and consultant for a global technology solutions and services firm where she honed her skills at leading global and cross-functional matrix teams. Entering the higher education realm in 1995, she has led innovative change initiatives for public and private universities, with specific expertise in leveraging technology, data, and analytics for organizational success. She is also the former assistant dean of enrollment management at Northwestern University School of Professional Studies and the founding director of enrollment research and technology at Texas A&M University.

Monique is a national leader, speaker, and author on strategic enrollment management; founding and former editorial board member of the Strategic Enrollment Management Quarterly journal; and currently serves on the editorial board of College & University journal. She is an American Council on Education (ACE) Council of Fellows board member, teaching faculty for the University of Southern California Equity Institutes, and an elected commissioner on the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Senior Colleges and University Commission.

She is a first-generation college student who earned an associate of arts degree before transferring to Texas A&M University, where she subsequently earned her bachelor’s of business administration in business analysis. She went on at Texas A&M to receive a master's of science in management information systems and a PhD in organizational communication. She proudly proclaims and frames her educational and professional journey as a “transfer student success story,” an experience she shares with many CU Denver students.

Monique L. Snowden

Antonio Farias serves as the Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion responsible for driving and developing initiatives that build on and advance CU Denver’s commitment to equity and justice.

Antonio joined CUDenver from the University of Florida, where he served as its inaugural Chief Diversity Officer and Senior Advisor to the President. There he oversaw university-wide efforts to advance The Big I.D.E.A! – Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, & Access. Antonio worked closely with cabinet members, deans, and a network of campus diversity liaisons embedded in the leadership teams of each college and business unit, who advanced I.D.E.A. within their respective micro cultures.

Antonio was previously Vice President for Equity and Inclusion at Wesleyan University and, before that, the inaugural Chief Diversity Officer for the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

Antonio has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of California, Riverside.

Antonio Farias

Marie Williams is a marketing communications professional with more than 20 years of experience in the field. Williams leads the University Communications team, which is responsible for external and internal communications, media relations, marketing, brand strategy, social media, and web communications.  

Williams previously served as Vice President for Marketing and Communications at Saint Joseph’s University, where she led the university’s brand image, marketing and advertising initiatives, public relations and internal communications. There, she reorganized the marketing and communications office into an in-house creative and strategic consultancy to enhance the visibility and reputation of the university. During her tenure, Williams oversaw a major rebrand and website redesign, among other initiatives. 

Additionally, Williams served as a Senior Vice President at Edelman, a communications and marketing firm headquartered in New York City. She led the education practice and worked with K–12 and higher education clients, including Yale, Columbia, New York University, and Bowdoin College. She also managed social purpose clients and campaigns ranging from the United Way to the Rockefeller Foundation.  

Earlier in her career, Williams served as Senior Managing Director at RF|Binder, a communications firm. She provided counsel and strategic support to clients across the education spectrum, including nonprofits, startups, publishers, and other corporations. Specifically, Williams worked with McGraw-Hill Education to improve K–16 education in our nation’s schools; with the Harvard-MIT online learning initiative, edX, and its member institutions to provide free access to education around the world; with the International Reading Association to eradicate global illiteracy; and with the Harlem Educational Activities Fund and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America to increase awareness for the importance of college readiness in underserved communities. 

Williams began her career in higher education, having held communications positions at Temple University and the University of Pennsylvania Health System, where she served the School of Medicine. 

She holds a BA in communication from the University of Pennsylvania and participates in several leading professional communications organizations.

Marie Williams

Constancio Nakuma, PhD, a dedicated educator with nearly 30 years of higher education experience, joins CU Denver after a successful 19-year tenure at Clemson University, where he served as Associate Provost for Academic Affairs. In addition to his administrative role at Clemson, Constancio was a professor of French and linguistics and served as a senior associate dean of academic affairs and department chair. Prior to Clemson, he was an associate professor and program director at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He also served as a lecturer at Saint Mary's University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he obtained an MBA degree.

Throughout his career, Constancio has demonstrated success in academic leadership, strategic planning at the departmental, collegiate, and provost levels, as well as financial management and budgeting. He has experience with academic program assessment, development and assessment of student learning outcomes, development and implementation of academic curricula, and faculty recruitment and development. Among other achievements, Constancio has created multidisciplinary degree programs between humanities and STEM, health, and business fields that have been successful in attracting and engaging students along their educational journeys.

A multilingual teacher and scholar, he has been educated in Africa, Europe, and North America. Constancio received his bachelor’s from the University of Ghana-Legon, Accra, Ghana; his master’s from Université Paris X-Nanterre, France; and his PhD from Sorbonne Nouvelle.

Constancio Nakuma

Jennifer Sobanet joined CU Denver on July 1, 2016 and currently serves as CU Denver’s Executive Vice Chancellor of Administration and Strategy. 

Jennifer’s role expanded in Spring 2021 to include leading CU Denver’s strategic plan implementation, catalyzing strategic partnerships and innovation, and aligning the university’s resources to achieve its vision. While continuing to be accountable for the administrative and financial strategy of the university, she leads the university’s work in incubating, resourcing, and operationalizing its strategic initiatives, as well as developing new corporate, community and public/non-profit partnerships, with a strong emphasis on public-private partnerships, that elevate CU Denver’s research and creative works, teaching and learning, student experiences and success, and community impact. She oversees efforts to reimagine CU Denver’s space and place given its unique location in downtown Denver and actualize the vision through public-private partnerships and other innovative financing strategies. 

Previously, as Executive Vice Chancellor for Finance and Business Operations and Chief Financial Officer, Jennifer led the development of the university’s new incentive-based budget model, which rewards financial growth and reallocation of resources to innovative financial strategies. Jennifer also established the Office of Strategic Impact to support operational and performance enhancements by growing leadership effectiveness, breaking down functional silos, aligning resources, encouraging learning, facilitating stakeholder engagement and developing a shared mindset for continuous improvement and innovation. Also under her leadership, a public-private partnership (P3) procurement process occurred to explore options for the first-year student housing project, City Heights, which opened in August 2021. Jennifer’s work has been instrumental to the creation of CU Denver’s Strategic Enrollment Management Plan, as well as the Auraria Campus Capital Renewal Project.

Melisa Baldwin is the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement at the University of Colorado Denver. She sets strategies for the university’s fundraising initiatives, including annual giving, major gifts, corporate giving, foundation relations and gift planning. She also oversees Alumni Relations, Donor Relations and Advancement Communications.

With more than 19+ years of experience as a university development professional, Baldwin has contributed to growth in fundraising results in every position she has held. She has vast experience in setting the strategic direction and managing the operational execution of fundraising campaigns. Baldwin previously worked in advancement at Kennesaw State University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia State University, and University of Florida.

Baldwin and her husband, Mark Reiner, live and play in downtown Denver. 

Melisa Baldwin

Gitanjali Rao is a 15-year-old American scientist, inventor and STEM promoter. She won the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge in 2017 for her lead-detection device, which is capable of finding lead in drinking water with the aid of a mobile app. Most recently, Rao developed Kindly, a phone and Web tool that uses artificial intelligence technology to detect possible early signs of cyberbullying. She's been recognized as Forbes 30 U 30 for her innovations and recently was named Time's Kid of the Year for 2020. 

Gitanjali Rao

Michelle Marks became CU Denver’s chancellor on July 1, 2020. A noted innovator in higher education, Chancellor Marks will spend her first 100 days gathering input to assess CU Denver’s progress and priorities and chart a course for its future.
