Dennis Assanis

Dennis Assanis is the current President at University of Delaware. Prior to their current position, they served as Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at Stony Brook University from January 2011 to May 2016. In this role, they oversaw the academic mission of Stony Brook University’s main campus, provided direct supervision for all academic units, support services and operations, and coordinated all academic programs.

During Dr. Assanis’ term as Provost, Stony Brook University experienced the most transformative change in its history through the addition of 250 new faculty members, the growth of interdisciplinary activities, centers and institutes, and enhanced partnerships across the entire campus and with other institutions. Provost Assanis established processes for reviewing the undergraduate and graduate programs, departments, schools and colleges in order to improve quality and steward excellence. In parallel, Provost Assanis led the effort to design and implement a new activity-based budget system for academic affairs. As part of SBU’s reinvigorated globalization agenda, Provost Assanis spearheaded the development of Stony Brook academic programs at the Songdo Global University Campus in the Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority, South Korea, thus becoming the first American University ever to offer degrees in Korea.

Under Dr. Assanis’ leadership, Stony Brook University achieved numerous milestones, including being ranked among the top 1 percent of universities worldwide by Times Higher Education, becoming a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, and being named a “Best Value” public university by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance.

Dennis Assanis holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Columbia University. Dennis is a Fellow of both the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the American Academy of Mechanics.

Dennis Assanis received their high school diploma from Athens College in Greece. Dennis then went on to earn their Ph. D. in Power and Propulsion from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
