Gen. Casey is a retired four-star general who served as the 36th Chief of Staff of the United States Army from April 2007 until his retirement in April 2011. Prior to this, Gen. Casey served as Commanding General, Multi-National Force-Iraq. He joined the Army after graduating from Georgetown and served as a Georgetown board member until recently. He is a former board member of Georgetown University. He currently serves as a Distinguished Senior Lecturer of Leadership at Cornell’s Johnson Graduate School of Management and board member of RISE, which promotes racial justice and equity through sports.
Gen. Casey is active at the University of Denver, traveling to Denver every spring since 2012 to teach a two-week graduate course on civil-military relations at the Josef Korbel School of International Students. Established in 2014 by DU trustee Craig Harrison and members of the Harrison family in honor of Gen. Casey, the Casey Leadership Scholars Program is designed to encourage graduate students to pursue leadership opportunities in the fields of international relations and public policy.
He and his wife, Sheila, have been married for over 50 years and have two sons, Ryan and Sean.
Gen. Casey is a graduate of Georgetown University where he earned his BS in Foreign Service. He earned his MA in International Studies from the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver.
