Meritza Tamez

Dean of Students at University of Houston-Downtown

At UHD, Dr. Tamez is responsible for managing referrals related to students who are alleged to have violated the Student Rights and Responsibilities policy, students in distress, student crises, and student grievances. She also oversees the student conduct process, adjudicates student conduct cases and facilitates student conduct hearings. In addition, Dr. Tamez chairs the university’s Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT), manages the Counseling and Health Services departments and facilitates Student Affairs involvement at freshman/transfer/international/graduate orientations.

In her role, Dr. Tamez is responsible for the development, implementation, progression and assessment for the division of Student Affairs. She also supervises all student life departments, including Career Development Center, Disability Services, Sports and Fitness, Student Activities and Veterans Services. Dr. Tamez also leads the Ring Ceremony, President’s Homecoming Barbecue, Global Scholars and other special projects supported through the Office of the President.
