Fiona Zakaria

Fiona Zakaria is a Post-doctoral Researcher in Urban Sanitation at the University of Leeds, where projects involve extensive data collection and management related to citywide sanitation, encompassing over 100 data points from 25 cities across 10 countries. Prior to this role, Fiona completed a PhD at IHE Delft Institute for Water Education, focusing on emergency sanitation and innovative solutions like a decision support system for sanitation options in crises and the e-SOS smart toilet. With extensive consulting experience at UNICEF, evaluating WASH options and monitoring emergency responses, Fiona has also contributed as a Watsan Engineer for Catholic Relief Services, overseeing water sanitation in disaster-affected areas, and worked for ICRC as a Wathab Field Officer. Academic credentials include a Master of Science in Water Science, Policy, and Management from the University of Oxford and a Doctor of Philosophy in Sanitary Engineering. Interests include faecal sludge characterization, management in healthcare facilities, and the impact of faecal borne pathogens.
