Rance Cleaveland is a distinguished academic and leader in the field of computer science, serving as the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Computing, Mathematical and Natural Sciences at the University of Maryland since June 2005. Additionally, Rance holds the position of Professor and serves as the Executive and Scientific Director at Fraunhofer CESE, where responsibilities include business strategy, project development, and technical research. Rance has been the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Reactive Systems Inc. since February 2000, focusing on strategic decision-making and business development. From July 2018 to July 2022, Rance directed the Computing and Communication Foundations division at the National Science Foundation, overseeing a $200 million research division and developing strategic partnerships. Previous academic positions include professorships at Stony Brook University and North Carolina State University. Rance earned a PhD and MS in Computer Science from Cornell University, as well as a BS in Mathematics and Computer Science from Duke University.
