Lauren Erland, PhD has a diverse work experience in research and academia. Starting in 2009, they worked as a Research Assistant at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. From 2011 to 2015, they pursued their Master's degree at The University of British Columbia, focusing on Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. During this time, they also served as a Teaching Assistant and conducted research in the Plant Molecular Biology and Biochemistry Lab.
In 2015, Lauren joined the University of Guelph as a PhD candidate, where their research focused on the roles of melatonin and serotonin in plant morphogenesis. Lauren utilized various plant systems and techniques such as plant tissue culture, propagation, and LC-MS quantification.
Returning to The University of British Columbia in 2019, Lauren took on multiple roles, including a Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow and a Research Associate. Lauren also served as an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellow, focusing on enhancing understanding of plant climate change resilience in arctic and alpine plant species. Additionally, they worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, collaborating with Syilx and Nlaka'pamux Peoples to incorporate Western scientific approaches and Traditional Ecological Knowledge into ecosystem research.
Most recently, in 2022, Lauren became the Director of Berry Research at the University of the Fraser Valley. Lauren also holds the position of Affiliate Assistant Professor at The University of British Columbia.
Lauren Erland, PhD, completed their Bachelor of Science (Hons) degree in Microbiology at the University of British Columbia Okanagan from 2008 to 2012. Lauren then pursued their Master of Science (MSc) degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at The University of British Columbia from 2013 to 2015. Finally, Lauren earned their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Plant Agriculture - Plant Physiology and Biochemistry from the University of Guelph, where they studied from 2015 to 2019.
