Tamara Alrifai has extensive work experience in the field of external relations, communications, and advocacy. Tamara is currently serving as the Director of External Relations and Communications at UNRWA since August 2022. Prior to this, they held the position of Director Of Strategic Communications at UNRWA from February 2019 to September 2022.
Before joining UNRWA, Tamara worked as the Regional Advocacy and Communications Adviser at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) from November 2014 to February 2019. Tamara also served as the Advocacy and Communications Director, Middle East and North Africa at Human Rights Watch from September 2012 to August 2014.
Tamara's career started at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in August 2001, where they held the roles of Delegate and spokesperson from August 2010 to August 2012, and Communications Adviser from August 2001 to December 2010. During their time at ICRC, they gained experience in public information, communications, advocacy, and journalism. Tamara also provided strategic communications advice to senior leaders and managed diverse teams, including during crisis situations. Tamara also has experience in representation and public speaking.

Tamara Alrifai completed their Bachelor's degree in Political Science and Government from the American University of Beirut between 1992 and 1995. Tamara then pursued a Master's degree in International/Global Studies from the University of Birmingham from 1997 to 1998.
