Sam Whitehall has over 8 years of experience in software engineering and machine learning research. In 2022, they joined KrakenFlex (Octopus Energy Group) as a Senior Software Engineer (Tech Team Lead), leading the Hydra team responsible for data lake management, automated reporting infrastructure, ad hoc data science insights, and data services for customers. From 2018 to 2021, they worked at EDITED as a Staff Software Engineer and then a Senior Software Engineer, where they were a founding member of the data monitoring squad and led technical projects to improve data ingestion quality. Sam also developed and designed an internal tool called Spider Sense to monitor crawler data quality. From 2014 to 2018, they worked at Optimor Ltd as a Software Engineer, developing a recommendation data pipeline and quality framework and modifying a statistical engine to support a new market. In 2014, they also worked at Real Time Trains as a Machine Learning Researcher. From 2013 to 2014, they worked at the University of Southampton as a Project Support Assistant, implementing and analysing application of sparse inverse covariance estimation on high-dimensional data for sentiment analysis and pattern identification. From 2011 to 2013, they worked at the Southampton University Student's Union (SUSU) as an Online Manager for Wessex Scene, where they were responsible for website maintenance, design improvement, writing plugins, and a significant website redesign.
Sam Whitehall attended the University of Southampton from 2010 to 2014, where they obtained a MEng in Computer Science. Prior to that, they attended Fallibroome High School from 2003 to 2009.
