Gary L. Word has had a long and varied career in the public and private sectors. From 1991 to 2006, they worked as the City Manager of Northville, Michigan, where they were responsible for preparing City Council agendas, annual budget, hiring and firing personnel, promoting economic development, and resolving citizen complaints. From 2006 to 2008, they were the Village Manager of Islamorada, Village of Islands. In 2008, they became the Town Manager of Surfside. In 2011, they began working as a Compliance Specialist for USA Mobile Drug Testing National Franchisor and USA Mobile Drug Testing of Miami, where they helped companies develop drug-free workplace programs, employee drug and alcohol education programs, and supervisor training for reasonable suspicion.

Gary L. Word completed their Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in American History (United States) from Evangel University between 1969 and 1972. Gary L. then obtained their Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Educational Leadership and Administration, General from the University of Missouri-Kansas City between 1973 and 1976. Finally, they earned their Master of Public Administration (M.P.A.) in Urban Studies/Affairs from The University of Kansas between 1977 and 1979.
