James T. Tsai

James T. Tsai currently serves as a Primary Patent Examiner at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) since April 2014, specializing in computer software, graphical user interfaces, and artificial intelligence. From March 2022 to January 2023, Tsai took on the role of a patent business analyst, managing the transition to a next-generation Patent Center product. Prior to joining USPTO, Tsai held various positions including Advisor at FaegreBD Consulting, where responsibilities included direct lobbying and legislative analysis, and Attorney at Pesner Kawamoto & Conway, PLC, focusing on bankruptcy and civil litigation. Tsai also has experience as a Judicial Law Clerk with U.S. Bankruptcy Courts and has worked in several legal capacities for government agencies including the U.S. House of Representatives and the Federal Trade Commission. Educational qualifications include a Juris Doctor degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Law and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Math from the University of Virginia.
