Brian Coughlan has a diverse and extensive work experience in the energy industry. Brian began their career as an Industrial Power Engineer, where they coordinated construction projects, negotiated power sales contracts, and performed energy audits for large commercial and industrial customers. Brian also designed an operating process that significantly reduced energy costs at a water treatment plant.
Brian then joined Carolina Power & Light Company, where they held various roles. As a Distribution Engineer, they designed distribution facilities and chaired a safety council. Brian later became an Area Engineering Manager, responsible for distribution engineering, planning, budgeting, and customer negotiations. Brian successfully managed seven professional employees and a significant annual budget.
Brian's next position was as a District Engineering Supervisor, overseeing corporate engineering, operations, and support functions. Brian excelled in contract procurement, negotiating contracts for distribution line construction and tree clearing. Brian then became the Eastern Region Engineering & Operations Manager, where they managed engineering, construction, maintenance, customer service, and sales for a large area. Brian successfully managed a workforce of 480 people and an annual budget of over $32 million.
Currently, Brian is the President of Utility Management Services, Inc. Brian leads a staff of over 50 full-time professional employees and independent Account Managers across the United States. Using their proprietary software, RateMaster, they analyze utility bills and contracts to identify savings opportunities for commercial, industrial, and governmental utility customers.
Throughout their extensive career, Brian has consistently demonstrated strong leadership skills, effective budget management, and expertise in engineering and operations within the energy industry.
Brian Coughlan has an extensive education history in the field of electrical and electronics engineering. Brian obtained a Bachelor's degree from Virginia Tech in 1982 and went on to pursue a Master's degree at North Carolina State University, specializing in the same field from 1987 to 1990.
To complement their engineering background, Brian also pursued a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, which they completed from 1998 to 2000.
Additionally, Brian has obtained several certifications to further enhance their professional qualifications. Brian is a registered Professional Engineer (PE) with the NC Board of Registration for Engineers & Land Surveyors, which they achieved in February 1987. Brian also holds certifications as a Certified Demand Side Management Professional, Certified Energy Auditor (CEA), Certified Energy Manager, and Certified Energy Procurement Professional (CEP), all conferred by the Association of Energy Engineers.
