Director Of Synthetic Immunotherapy Development at Vaccitech

Hugh Welles has an extensive work experience in the field of scientific research and development. Hugh currently holds the position of Senior Research Development Scientist at Vaccitech, where they are involved in the development of the Vaccitech SNAPvax antibody vaccine platform. In this role, they focus on eliciting antibodies through nanoparticle-based vaccination methods.

Prior to their current position, Hugh worked as a Senior Research Development Scientist at Avidea Technologies, where they contributed to research and development projects.

Hugh also served as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), from 2018 to 2021. During this time, they led a research project investigating the link between antibody responses to microbiota and disease/vaccine outcomes.

Before that, they were a PhD Student at the National Institutes of Health from 2012 to 2018. In their role as a PhD student, they conducted research under the supervision of Dr. Mario Roederer, focusing on the identification and characterization of SIV specific monoclonal antibodies and their delivery to non-human primates.

Additionally, Hugh gained experience as a Research Assistant at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where they assisted in the development of a systems-based assessment of pathways of toxicity in neuroprogenitor cells.

Their work experience also includes a Master's Student position at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois, where they investigated human CD4 T cell responses in healthy donors and HIV clinical trial subjects.

Moreover, Hugh worked as a Research Assistant at EPFL, where they conducted research on the interactions between CD40 and CD40L in the context of Leishmania major infected macrophages.

Furthermore, they gained research experience as an undergraduate Research Assistant at the New England Primate Research Center, where they worked on sequencing and cloning gene transcripts to characterize CD8 T cell responses in rhesus macaques.

Lastly, Hugh has teaching experience as a Teacher's Assistant at Bucknell University, where they assisted in teaching biology laboratory practical sessions, prepared experiments, administered student laboratory training, and graded exams.

Throughout their career, Hugh Welles has contributed significantly to the scientific community through their research and development work in various organizations and positions.

Hugh Welles completed their Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Biology at Bucknell University from 2004 to 2008. Hugh then pursued a Master of Science (MS) in Medical Biology - Immunology at Universite de Lausanne, attending from 2009 to 2011. Most recently, Welles earned their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Microbiology and Immunology from The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, where they studied from 2012 to 2016.
