Thomas Nieland

Senior Director, Head of Exploratory Biology & Target Validation at Verge Genomics

Thomas joins Verge Genomics to head up our Exploratory Biology and Target Validation team. He comes to us from Tufts University where his research focused on understanding mechanisms of neurodegenerative and psychiatric disorders. His multidisciplinary research combines stem cell, bioengineering and organoid technology with ‘omics’ profiling and artificial intelligence to identify biomarkers and targets, and to develop novel therapies.

Thomas brings more than 15 years of expertise in functional genomics, genetics and drug discovery research related to Alzheimer and Parkinson’s disease, schizophrenia and autism, leading research groups in Academia and Industry. His PhD training in Chemical Biology was done at Harvard and MIT, with a degree awarded from the VU University of Amsterdam, and he received Post-doctoral training in Neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University. He previously worked at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard and Merck Research Laboratories.
