Yan Stienen has had a varied work experience. In 2020, they began working as a Software Engineering Manager at ViCentra. From 2017 to 2020, they worked as the Head of Software Development at Motek. From 2012 to 2017, they were an Assistant Professor and Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Twente. In 2011, they worked as a Researcher at Medtronic, where they led a large animal study to investigate deep brain stimulation therapies for movement disorders and developed analysis methods of brain recordings to determine patient disease states, resulting in a pending patent application.
Yan Stienen obtained a BEng in Honours Electrical, Computer, and Software Engineering from McGill University in 2006. Yan then attended Northwestern University for a MS in Biomedical Engineering, which they completed in 2009. Yan continued their studies at Northwestern University, earning a PhD in Biomedical Engineering in 2013. In 2016, Yan obtained a Staatsexamen NT2 Programma II from Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO). Additionally, in 2013, they obtained Article 9 (Wet op Dierproeven) from Radboud University Nijmegen.
