Tom Kimkes, PhD has a diverse work experience in the field of microbiology, data analysis, and project management. Tom started their career as a PhD candidate at the University of Groningen, where they conducted research on the surface sensing and initiation of biofilm formation in Escherichia coli. Their work involved using genetic reporter constructs and microfluidic setups to study bacterial behavior under the fluorescence microscope.
After completing their PhD, Tom worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Groningen, where they contributed to an international collaboration investigating the connection between metabolism, intracellular pH, and bacterial persistence. Their responsibilities included determining the fraction of persister cells in bacterial cultures and monitoring intracellular pH using fluorescence ratios.
Tom then joined Ardena as a Project Manager and Study Director. In this role, they were responsible for overseeing the bioanalytical phase of (pre)clinical studies, ensuring timely delivery of results within budget and regulatory compliance. Tom also played a key role in scientific development, troubleshooting, and validation of immunoassays, as well as project management, team leadership, and client communication.
Afterwards, Tom worked as a Consultant Image Analysis at 10x Genomics through Randstad Sweden. Tom provided computational biology and image analysis support for In Situ Sequencing projects using tools like MATLAB, CellProfiler, and R.
Most recently, Tom worked at Q-linea as a Scientist in the Research department. Tom worked on exploratory and feasibility projects in bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Their tasks included project planning, experimental work in the microbiology laboratory, data analysis, and reporting. Tom also developed automated data handling and analysis routines for colleagues without programming knowledge.
Currently, Tom is a Product Specialist at Viedoc. Further details about this role are not provided.
Tom Kimkes, PhD, has a diverse education history. Tom obtained their Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Biology from the University of Groningen, where they studied from 2009 to 2012. Following their undergraduate degree, they pursued a Master of Science (MSc) in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology from the University of Groningen, which they completed from 2012 to 2014.
In addition to their studies at the University of Groningen, Tom Kimkes also attended Uppsala University in 2014, where they obtained a second Master of Science (MSc) degree in Molecular Systems Biology.
Prior to their university education, Tom Kimkes attended the Willem Lodewijk Gymnasium from 2003 to 2009, where they received their Gymnasium degree. At the gymnasium, they focused on the fields of Nature and Technology, as well as Nature and Health.
Tom Kimkes has also acquired several additional certifications to complement their educational background. In 2023, they obtained Swedish language certifications (Svenska för invandrare, nivåer C3 och D (CEFR nivå B1+)) from Hermods AB. In the same year, they completed courses in Data Analysis with R, Design and Interpretation of Clinical Trials, and Six Sigma Principles through Coursera. In 2022, they gained a Project Management certification (LinkedIn learning path - 11 PDU (PMI)) from LinkedIn. Furthermore, they achieved a Python for Data Science certification from SoloLearn in 2021 and a Good Laboratory Practice certification for Study Directors, Principal Investigators, Study Staff, and Management from the Research Quality Association (RQA) in 2020.
