Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Vitas

Joe Shega has a strong background in the healthcare industry, particularly in end-of-life care. Joe first joined VITAS Innovative Hospice Care in 2013 as a Regional Medical Director, a role they held until 2016. During this time, they focused on improving the care of older adults at the end of their lives and expanding service offerings for high-acuity and complex hospice patients.

In 2016, Joe Shega was promoted to the position of Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at VITAS Healthcare, the nation's leading provider of end-of-life care. In this role, they were responsible for ensuring clinical excellence and high-quality hospice care across VITAS programs in 14 states and the District of Columbia. Joe continued to devote their career to improving end-of-life care, defining palliative care service offerings, and incorporating scientific discovery into VITAS's mission as a leader in the industry. In 2021, they transitioned to the role of Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, maintaining their responsibilities for clinical excellence and high-quality care.

Joe Shega holds a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Lewis University. Joe then pursued a Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Northwestern University - The Feinberg School of Medicine. Joe further specialized in Geriatric Medicine through a Fellowship at The University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. Later, they completed their Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Additionally, they have obtained certifications in Geriatric Medicine and Hospice and Palliative Care from the American Board of Internal Medicine. Joe is also licensed to practice medicine in the states of Florida and Illinois.
