Randy Nielsen has a diverse work experience spanning several decades. Randy co-founded Vocera Communications in 2000 and served as the Co-Founder and Principal Engineer, primarily working on firmware development for Vocera's badge. Randy also contributed to software test automation tools, development on smartphones, and future study. Prior to that, Randy co-founded Portera Systems in 1996 and worked there until 1999. Before that, they were a Staff Engineer at Borland from 1988 to 1996 and a Senior Software Engineer at Ansa Software from 1986 to 1988. Randy's career as a software engineer, entrepreneur, and architect began in 1969 and continued until 1986, during which they worked for various companies.

Randy Nielsen obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley, where they attended from 1964 to 1968.
