Council Description

The Seattle Education Association (SEA) is a diverse 6,000-member Local/Council comprised of certificated, paraprofessional, and office professionals – including substitutes – who work for Seattle Public Schools.  SEA is a member-driven and member-led organization that works with a high degree of collaboration and teamwork between SEA staff and leaders.

The SEA is the collective voice of educators working in union where members across all identities are full participants in decisions to address the legacy and continuing impacts of systemic racism in order to improve educator working conditions and transform our schools.

Responsibilities:

  • This position will support Washington Education Association (WEA)/SEA members in building and exercising power at the state and local level.

  • Negotiate and enforce local collective bargaining agreements.

  • Advocate for racial, social, and economic justice for WEA/SEA members, students, and communities and work to dismantle barriers to success for all students in public education.

  • Provide local, regional, and statewide member, and leader training relating to advocacy, collective bargaining, leadership, strategic planning, and organizing.

  • Build power by actively growing WEA/SEA membership and WEA-PAC (Political Action Committee) enrollment and maintaining membership numbers.

  • Support professional development and training efforts for certificated educators and classified education support professionals.

  • Provide counsel and advice to leadership and members.

  • Organize crisis efforts as needed to include strikes.

  • Work collaboratively with staff, work teams, locals, districts, and community groups to meet deadlines.

  • Deliver consistent and positive member communication.

  • Demonstrate professional standards of engagement with members, staff, and local leaders.

  • Support the union’s political and legislative activities.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable experience.

  • Experience working with unions as a staff person with demonstrated success organizing to build strong local associations.

  • Demonstrated experience working with communities of color or with historically underrepresented groups to enhance civil rights.

  • Political and/or Community Organizing experience with a proven track record of working effectively with multiple stakeholders.

  • Collective bargaining experience.

  • Proven success implementing effective strategies for membership recruitment and retention.

  • Ability to develop and implement short- and long-term strategic work plans.

  • Must be able to travel within Washington State for various meetings and work in person at SEA offices on a daily basis.

Supervision

The successful incumbent will function as a member of the Seattle Education Association staff and the Advocacy & Organizing Center of the Washington Education Association.  The UniServ Director will report to the Executive Director of the Seattle Education Association.
