Julia Abernethy

Julia Abernethy is a seasoned professional with extensive experience in data science and public health. Currently serving as Technology Lead at Wellcome Trust since January 2023, Julia focuses on identifying research funding opportunities to combat infectious diseases through innovative digital tools. Previously, as Delivery Lead Genomics at NHSX, Julia enhanced the use of genomic data for patient benefit through collaboration with research, government, and industry partners. Julia's expertise in patient safety was demonstrated as Head of Patient Safety Measurement for Improvement at NHS England and as Patient Safety Lead at NHS Improvement. Early career roles include analyzing emergency department data at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and leading healthcare-associated infection surveillance at the Health Protection Agency. Julia's educational background includes a Master's in Epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, a PhD in Genetic Anthropology from UCL, and a Bachelor's degree in Archaeology and Anthropology from the University of Cambridge.
