Stephen Guarino

Chief Health Physicist at West Physics

Stephen Guarino has extensive experience in the field of health physics and radiation safety. Stephen is currently working as the Chief Health Physicist at West Physics since February 2022. Prior to this, they worked at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as an Associate Radiation Safety Officer from January 2017 to January 2022.

Before their tenure at UNC Chapel Hill, Stephen worked at the National Institutes of Health as a Health Physicist from January 2014 to January 2017. During their time there, they served as the primary health physicist for the cyclotron area and Integrated Research Facility, including the BSL 4 lab. Stephen was also involved in reviewing human protocols involving research radiation as part of the Pre-Radiation Safety Committee.

Stephen also has experience at the RI Nuclear Science Center. From September 2012 to September 2013, they served as the Assistant Director for Radiation and Reactor Safety. In this role, they managed radiation safety programs for the RINSC's reactor license and URI's broadscope license and research vessel, Endeavor. Additionally, they oversaw the laser safety program and the x-ray program, including registration and annual surveys.

Prior to their role as Assistant Director, Stephen worked as a Health Physicist at the Rhode Island Nuclear Science Center from May 2010 to September 2012. Stephen'sresponsibilities included conducting surveys of radiation areas, managing radioactive waste, inspecting radioactive materials and laser labs, decommissioning labs, and managing nuclear reactor fuel.

Stephen Guarino completed their education at the University of Rhode Island. From 2003 to 2007, they obtained a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree with a focus in Physics and Physical Oceanography. Later, from 2008 to 2012, they pursued a Master of Science (MS) degree in Physics. In November 2019, Stephen also obtained the Certified Health Physicist (CHP) certification from the American Academy of Health Physics.
