Darrell Newton

Provost & VP, Academic Affairs, Chief Academic Officer at Winona State University

Darrell Newton is the current Provost and VP for Academic Affairs, as well as the Chief Academic Officer, at Winona State University. Prior to this, they served as the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Dean of Graduate Studies at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire from July 2017 to July 2020. In this role, they administered the Graduate Studies budget, oversaw the classroom and laboratory modernization funds, advocated for Graduate Studies inside and outside of the University, assisted in the development and review of faculty evaluation plans, chaired the Graduate Council, and more. Darrell also participated in the recruitment and orientation of new faculty and instructional academic staff, represented the University at UW System, regional, and national councils linked to graduate education, and reviewed all faculty and instructional academic contracts.

Darrell Newton has dedicated their career to higher education and has been a champion of academic excellence. Darrell is a strong advocate for interdisciplinary collaboration and curricular innovation at the graduate level. Their passion for ensuring that all students have access to quality education has led him to be an active participant in recruitment and admissions for graduate students. Darrell also takes an active role in supporting the implementation of the University strategic plan, transformed learning, continuous improvement and operational efficiency.

Darrell Newton's educational career includes earning a Bachelor's Degree in Mass Communication/Media Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Media and Cultural Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Master's Degree in Television Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a Master's Degree in English: Creative Writing from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Darrell Newton works with Eric Schoh - Athletic Director, Jon Olson - VP for University Advancement & Executive Director of the WSU Foundation, and Denise McDowell - VP for Enrollment Management & Student Life.
