About the role

Wonder is hiring a Director of Real Estate Counsel to oversee all legal aspects of our real estate business with a focus on construction and facilities management. Key responsibilities include: 

  • Construction and Development: Manage all legal aspects of construction and development, including drafting, reviewing, and negotiating agreements with general contractors, engineers, architects, and other related parties. Address mechanics liens, construction and design defects, insurance requirements, construction delays, and related litigation.
  • Vendor and Supplier Agreements: Handle master agreements and work orders with subcontractors, vendors, and suppliers for construction and facilities maintenance.
  • Leases and Licenses: Review, draft, and negotiate leases, licenses, and related documents. Ensure compliance with landlord requirements during construction and operations.
  • Site Diligence: Conduct and review site diligence, including zoning reports, condo declarations, title reports, property surveys, and environmental reports.
  • Legal Advice: Provide legal advice on day-to-day construction, leasing, facilities maintenance, zoning, and environmental issues. 

The experience you have

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in construction and real estate law, with experience in vendor contract management and a thorough understanding of leases, construction agreements and facilities maintenance agreements. Additional requirements include: 

  • JD or LLM
  • Member of New York bar in good standing
  • 5+ years commercial real estate experience, including heavy construction experience in an in-house legal department
  • Experience with construction and leasing (representing tenant), with focus in retail, and a rapidly expanding portfolio
  • Experience managing complex transactions and juggling conflicting deadlines
  • Excellent drafting, negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to innovate to resolve complex issues, attain business objectives and create efficiencies
  • Experience in restaurant/food industry, retail construction, and environmental health and safety matters

Base Salary Range: $231,000
