From there, they worked as a Graduate Student at the University of Duisburg-Essen, where they collaborated with X-ray crystallographers and performed quantum chemical refinement of the rhodopsin structure. Sivakumar then became a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, where they researched molecular electronics and self-assembling supramolecular assemblies.

In 2008, Sivakumar joined Emory University as a Postdoctoral Fellow, focusing on the structure and function of vertebrate and invertebrate photoreceptors and GPCRs. Sivakumar made significant contributions to the field through their comparative analysis of the primary photochemical events in different rhodopsins.

In 2012, Sivakumar became a Visiting Postdoctoral Fellow at the Fukui Institute for Fundamental Chemistry, Kyoto University. Sivakumar then joined Yale University as an Associate Research Scientist, where they implemented quantum chemistry methods to study visual pigments. Sivakumar collaborated with experimentalists and performed data analysis for site-directed mutagenesis experiments.

Sivakumar's next role was as a Computational Chemist at Cloud Pharmaceuticals Inc, where they developed computational strategies for designing small molecules and peptides with improved pharmacokinetic properties. Sivakumar utilized advanced computational and molecular modeling techniques for drug design and optimization.

In 2016, Sivakumar joined The Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre as a Research and Applications Scientist. Their responsibilities included assisting research partners in pharmaceutical companies and universities in utilizing CCDC software tools effectively. Sivakumar also logged problems and enhancement requests, channeled customer feedback to the development team, and helped diagnose software issues.

Most recently, Sivakumar worked at XtalPi Inc. as a Senior Applications Scientist and later as a Senior Director of Business Development. In these roles, they managed accounts in various global territories, acted as a client advocate, and ensured client needs were met.
