Powertrain Systems Integration Engineer

Engineering · Full-time · CA, United States

Job description

The Powertrain Engineering team at Zoox is responsible for the design, development, and production of an electric powertrain specifically tailored for our autonomous mobility service. Our team has an action-biased culture marked by integrity, humility, competence, and passion for the Zoox mission and the systems we design. We are building real products here and are looking for doers to join us.

As a Powertrain Systems Integration Engineer, you will be working on system integration, system analysis, testing, and improving system behaviors and control mechanization of various components of our L5 EV High Voltage Powertrain. This will include developing various HW/SW system integration test requirements based on system architecture, bringing up powertrain systems, SW release testing, field issue analysis, and resolution, etc. Work cross-functionally with several amazing engineers to solve complex system problems by breaking them down into more solvable pieces. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to understand the root causes of failures, identify mitigation strategies, and incorporate learnings into new designs.

You will:

  • Develop and execute integration and bringing up activities for new software releases of powertrain components such as electric drive unit, battery management system, charging, etc, aimed at identifying risks early before broader release in the development cycles
  • Proactively identify and solve integration issues by bridging cross-functional gaps, ensuring seamless vehicle integration functionality of powertrain and charging systems.
  • Investigate system-level issues through detailed analysis of vehicle data logs and source code, collaborating with system experts within the powertrain team for quick resolution.
  • Support system engineering tasks, including defining interfaces and conducting functional tests across different powertrain and charging systems.
  • Develop and implement test plans and automation strategies for verifying powertrain and charging system software, while crafting validation strategies for new features to ensure comprehensive automated coverage with validation teams for future firmware updates.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, system architecture, firmware development, and validation teams to facilitate the integration of new hardware changes into firmware and assist in designing subsystems with the required specifications and interfaces.

Qualifications

  • BS or MS in electrical engineering, or a related relevant field
  • At least 5 years of automotive systems engineering experience related to high voltage powertrain systems (incl. energy storage and power conversion) and functional safety design approach.
  • Deep technical knowledge/understanding of electric vehicle powertrain and charging systems and subsystems, their working, interface interactions, safety protocols, etc.
  • Solid experience with automotive communication protocols (CAN, LIN, Flexray, Ethernet, SPI, I2C) and power domains and high voltage systems and testing tools.
  • Working knowledge/experience using simulation tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, LTSPICE, and programming tools such as Python, C, and C++

Bonus Qualifications

  • Familiarity with industry testing standards
  • SAE, MIL, UN, UL, GB/T, GTR
  • Familiarity with 3D design tools
  • High voltage and low voltage PCB design
  • Understanding of Lithium-Ion degradation and failure modes/mechanisms is a huge plus.
  • Understanding concepts of EMI/C is a huge plus.
