Katherine L. Hughes has a diverse work experience in the field of education and research. Katherine L. currently serves as a Principal Researcher at the American Institutes for Research since April 2018. Prior to this, they worked as the Principal of Edwordian LLC at Advance CTE, Community College Research Center, Charles A. Dana Center, and edBridge Partners starting from June 2017. In 2017, they were also a Project Director at Manhattan Strategy Group, where they led the Technical Assistance for Advancing Equity in Career and Technical Education project. From 2012 to 2017, they held various positions at The College Board, including Executive Director of Community College and Higher Education Initiatives and Senior Director of College Readiness Initiatives. Katherine L. began their career in 1995 at the Community College Research Center, where they served as the Assistant (Deputy) Director of Work and Education Reform Research, conducting projects and managing staff in the field of high school to college and career transitions.

Katherine L. Hughes earned their high school diploma from Mercersburg Academy between 1981 and 1983. Katherine L. then pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology at Georgetown University from 1985 to 1987. Following this, they completed their education at Columbia University, obtaining a PhD in Sociology from 1987 to 1995.
