Anna Honko has a diverse and extensive background in the field of biomedical research, specifically in the area of infectious diseases. Anna began their career as a Research Microbiologist at USAMRIID, where they served as a principal investigator and led a team in the development of antiviral vaccines and therapeutics. Anna also played a role in proposal preparation and budget management. During this time, they also served as a Postdoctoral Fellow, focusing on the characterization of immune responses to hemorrhagic viral diseases and the development of a rodent model for Lassa virus.
Honko later joined the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a Staff Scientist at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) IRF. In this role, they specialized in the usage of telemetry with high consequence pathogens, contributing to the design and implementation of telemetry protocols for collecting physiological data. Anna aimed to combine this data with other potential biomarkers for disease identification.
Following their time at NIH, Honko joined Data Sciences International (DSI) as an Account Manager, where they represented the company and provided solutions for integrated monitoring of physiological and respiratory endpoints in preclinical research models.
Honko then returned to the NIH as a Staff Scientist in the Biodefense Research Section (BRS). In this role, they supported the management of scientific activities and provided guidance on strategic planning for high containment pathogen studies. Anna also served as the lead for macaque nonclinical studies and was responsible for data analysis and figure preparation, as well as manuscript drafting and submission to regulatory agencies.
Most recently, Honko joined Apriori Bio as the Director of Preclinical Biology. The details of their role in this capacity are not yet provided.
Throughout their career, Honko has demonstrated expertise in the development and characterization of animal models, evaluation of vaccines and therapeutics, and strategic planning for high containment pathogen studies. Anna has also shown proficiency in data analysis, manuscript preparation, and collaboration with various partners in academia, industry, and government.
Anna Honko completed their Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Microbiology at Clemson University from 1997 to 2001. Subsequently, they pursued further education at Wake Forest University Graduate School from 2001 to 2005, where they obtained a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology.
