Heran Sereke-Brhan's work experience includes serving as Vice President of Strategic Planning and Community Engagement at Arts Consulting Group since January 2023. Prior to this, Heran worked as the Executive Director of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities from October 2019 to September 2022, and as a Senior Grants Officer from July 2017 to October 2019. Before that, they were the Deputy Director at the Mayor's Office on African Affairs from February 2014 to July 2017. Heran also served as a Research Associate at the ECDC African Community Center from 2010 to 2013 and held various roles at Boston University, African Review of Books (ARB), School for International Training (SIT) Study Abroad, Institute of Ethiopian Studies at Addis Ababa University, and the National Museum of African Art, Smithsonian, with each role spanning between one to two years.

Heran Sereke-Brhan has a Bachelor's degree in Political, Legal, and Economic Analysis from Mills College. Heran then went on to pursue a Master's degree in History at Michigan State University. Following their Master's degree, Heran Sereke-Brhan continued their education at Michigan State University and obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in African History, specializing in African Art History, African-American History, and Caribbean History.
