The Role The Industrial Automation & Controls Engineering team is looking to hire an experienced engineer to accelerate the development of 3D automated storage and retrieval systems. The successful candidate will act as a key contributor for new PLC and electrical designs in addition to providing support for sustaining existing sites in bug resolution and root-cause analysis. The successful candidate’s primary areas of responsibility are writing PLC software and designing electrical panels for industrial automation.

The team strives to use and develop best practice when it comes to PLCs. More than just binary logic, you will be using advanced programming techniques to make functional and maintainable software. Using modern soft PLCs we achieve complex interactions with Attabotics proprietary robots. Acting as the subject matter expert for electrical design and drafting you will contribute to design efforts and create the standards for the company to follow. Attabotics is looking to grow and expand meaning we are always looking for intelligent ways to automate our workflows and processes using other software tools; we aim to work smarter not harder.

Who you are

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical/Mechatronics Engineering or in a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 10+ years’ experience in Electrical & Automation design and implementation demonstrating increasing levels of responsibility and leadership
  • Expert level knowledge of PLC programming using Structured Text
  • Strong experience with PLC hardware design and validation, Control panel layout & design, and low voltage power distribution systems
  • Vast knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code as it relates to industrial automation panels
  • Strong ability to read and develop site and panel electrical schematics in 2D drafting packages eg Autocad
  • Knowledge and experience working with industrial communication protocols such as EtherCAT, Profibus, Ethernet/IP, Modbus, etc
  • Knowledge of Beckhoff ADS protocol is preferred.
  • Ideally has experience in designing to and obtaining field/type certifications through an NRTL such as UL/CSA/TUV
  • Working knowledge of applicable machine safety codes and standards is preferred (ISO13849, SPE1000, etc.)
  • Experience with Agile project management and development processes e.g. CI/CD
  • Experience with software version control repositories e.g. GIT, SVN
  • Experience with industrial machine design or configurable product design and specification, is an asset
  • Experience in product development and deploying commercial designs
  • Licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Professional Engineer with APEGA

What we need

  • Contribute to the architectural design, component selection and programming of Beckhoff PLC systems
  • Contribute to the prototyping and validation of PLC systems including interactions with power supplies, sensors, actuators, conveyors, safety light curtains etc
  • Prepare and review electrical designs and calculations; including but not limited to power distribution schematics, single line drawings, wiring layouts, panel design, I/O drawings, wiring schematics, cable schedules and network diagrams
  • Detail machine electrical design using proper drafting techniques, bills of materials creation, fabrication/assembly details, and inspection/testing instructions
  • Facilitate and manage feedback from the assembly/installation team to ensure continuous improvement
  • Employ software versioning tools such as GIT
  • Contribute to Risk Assessments and other safety analyses relating to automation designs
  • Coordinate with equipment manufacturers and suppliers to obtain all necessary design data and incorporate into the design drawings and specifications
  • Work within an Engineering Change process to track product updates
  • Work collaboratively with a cross functional team to take design concepts from R&D and make them a functioning, manufacturable, sustainable product
  • Work within Agile (Scrum, Kanban) tools and practices including backlogs, workflows, sprints, etc
