The Role

BGC is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer with a fundamental understanding and interest in soil mechanics, deep and shallow foundations, ground anchors, retaining walls, shoring and slope stabilization and related construction services to join our team in Western Canada. The suitable candidate will have the ability to work in multi-disciplined project teams across BGC’s various business sectors including transportation, mining, pipelines and communities and on technically challenging medium to large scale projects.

This position can be based in one of our BGC locations: Vancouver, Kelowna, Kamloops, Calgary, Edmonton. 

Responsibilities

  • Act as lead geotechnical engineer of record, coordinating geotechnical investigations, analyses, design and construction monitoring (CQA) for slope stabilization, foundation, and earth retention projects
  • Lead and coordinate proposal preparation and identify new opportunities
  • Manage projects from initiation to completion, including proposals, budgets, and schedules
  • Train and mentor junior and intermediate professional staff in the field and office
  • Complete regular field inspections and site visits during investigation and construction, to fulfill engineer of record responsibilities
  • Participate in coordination, training and career development of BGC’s civil geotechnical staff

Required Education, Experience & Competencies

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Engineering or Applied Science; civil or geological engineering with geotechnical focus
  • 12+ years of post-graduate experience in geotechnical engineering
  • Experience with field investigation techniques such as soil logging, SPT, and CPT
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer in Canada
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Strong understanding of soil mechanics, fundamental knowledge of geotechnical design, slope stability, soil-structure interaction, groundwater, seepage and drainage
  • Experience as lead geotechnical engineer, coordinating investigations, design and construction for deep and shallow foundations, such as spread footings, driven piles, drilled shafts, and micropiles
  • Experience with earth retention, such as shoring, retaining walls, slope retention and MSE walls
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills
  • Leadership, analytical and project management skills
  • A high level of proficiency with current geotechnical software applications, such as SLOPE/W, CPeT-IT, SETTLE3D, UNIPILE, LPILE AND GRLWEAP, is an asset

Position Requirements

Drug & Alcohol Testing

To ensure we meet our client’s compliance requirements and our workplace health and safety commitments, BGC has a drug and alcohol policy that applies to this position.  The policy states that an employee may be required to take a drug and alcohol test prior to engaging in field work. This testing could be requested within an employee’s first week or in the future, as required. It is important to note that some clients also require random drug and alcohol testing, and/or testing in the event of a health and safety accident or incident.

Driver’s License

BGC requires that employees have a valid driver's license, and that employees can drive a field pickup truck.  Upon hiring, BGC will require a driver’s abstract to allow for a safety review of your driving history.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $125,000 - $190,000 CAD per annum, however base pay will be commensurate with job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. BGC's compensation package also includes a training allowance and a comprehensive medical and dental plan.
