David W. Anderson

President & Chief Executive Officer at BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York

David W. Anderson joined BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York in July 2013 as the company’s seventh president and CEO. He is a seasoned health insurance executive with national experience and a strong track record of successfully engaging and managing organizations.

He leads BlueCross BlueShield with a focus on the company’s corporate goals and mission: to develop and provide innovative and cost-effective health care delivery solutions to support the needs of its members, stakeholders, and communities.

Before taking the helm of BlueCross BlueShield, Anderson was CEO of UnitedHealthcare’s Southern California Health Plan, based in Cypress, CA. He inherited the plan with membership losses and reduced financial performance. He was responsible for an organizational turnaround resulting in a 43 percent increase in operating income and a company-leading 84 percent level of employee engagement.

He serves on the board of the National Institute for Health Care Management, the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, the Business Council of New York State, Inc., the Buffalo Niagara Partnership, and the Buffalo Sabres Foundation. Additionally, Anderson is a member of Modern Healthcare’s CEO Power Panel - a quarterly poll of the health care industry's top leadership.

Anderson is a native of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and a graduate of Indiana University’s Kelly School of Business, with a B.S. in Finance. He has been an entrepreneur, an executive in many facets of the health insurance industry, and is well versed in competitive and highly regulated health care markets. He is a resident of Buffalo, and the father of five grown children.
