Head Of Department Of Design And Engineering (interim) at Bournemouth University

Diogo Montalvão has a diverse work experience in academia and research. Diogo currently serves as the Head of the Department of Design and Engineering (Interim) and an Associate Professor in Structural Dynamics at Bournemouth University. Diogo is also a Member of the Senate and leads the ADDISONIC Research Cluster. Prior to this, Diogo held various roles at Bournemouth University, including Deputy Head of Department, Principal Academic in Engineering, and Head of Education and Professional Practice. Diogo has also worked as a Senior Lecturer in Engineering at the University of Hertfordshire and as an Assistant Professor at the Escola Superior de Tecnologia de Setúbal and Instituto Superior Técnico. In addition, Diogo has served as an External Examiner at the University of the West of England and the University of Chichester. Diogo has also been a member of the Editorial Board at Materials MDPI and Elsevier's Heliyon journal. Diogo's research interests primarily focus on engineering and materials.

Diogo Montalvão has an extensive education history in the field of Mechanical Engineering. Diogo obtained a Licenciatura Pré-Bolonha (equivalent to MEng) in Mechanical Engineering (Design and Manufacturing) from Instituto Superior Técnico, where they also pursued a MSc in Mechanical Engineering (Dynamics, Modal Analysis and Vibrations) from 2001 to 2003. In 2005, they enrolled in the same institute to pursue a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, specializing in Impact Engineering of Composite Structures.

Additionally, Diogo Montalvão expanded their knowledge by attending specialized programs. In 2005, they attended a course on Dynamic Methods for Damage Detection in Structures at CISM - Centre Internacionale des Sciences Mécaniques. In 2008, they participated in a program on the Impact Engineering of Composite Structures at CISM as well.

Diogo further expanded their education by obtaining a Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) in Business Administration and Management, General from the University of Hertfordshire, which they completed from 2014 to 2016.

Diogo Montalvão has also obtained several certifications and memberships in various professional organizations. Notably, in 2004, they became a Member - Level E3 (CEng) of the Ordem dos Engenheiros. In 2014, they became a Member (CEng) of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and a CEng (Chartered Engineer) recognized by the Engineering Council. Diogo also obtained the CLAD - Certified LabVIEW Associate Developer certification from National Instruments UK & Ireland in 2013.

Throughout their career, they have acquired multiple fellowships including being a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2014, a Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institution of Engineering Designers since 2023, and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy since 2021. Diogo Montalvão also holds a membership with the Engineering Professors' Council and the Engineering Professors' Council.
