John Hanks

HPC Principal Engineer at Chan Zuckerberg Biohub

John Hanks has extensive experience in the field of high-performance computing (HPC) and scientific computing infrastructure. John is currently working as an HPC Principal Engineer at Chan Zuckerberg Biohub. Prior to that, they worked at griznog industries as a role titled "Untitled" from December 2021 to March 2022.

Before joining griznog industries, John worked at GSK as a Senior Manager - Scientific Computing Infrastructure from February 2020 to December 2021. John also worked at Stanford University as an HPC System Administrator from September 2017 to January 2020. At Stanford, they managed a diverse set of computing resources for the research community.

John's previous roles include working as a Senior System Administrator at KAUST from August 2014 to August 2017, where they were responsible for clusters and applications in the Computational Bioscience Research Center. John also served as the Director of Division of Research Computing at Utah State University from April 2012 to July 2014, overseeing the management of a condominium-style cluster computing environment and supporting various research applications.

Furthermore, John worked as a Senior HPC Analyst at the University of Colorado at Boulder from October 2010 to April 2012. John played a key role in managing hardware, networks, and storage resources for the campus community. John also developed and managed a testbed for Hadoop and Big Data projects.

Earlier in their career, John worked at The Broad Institute as a Senior Systems Analyst from August 2008 to September 2010, supporting sequencing and bioinformatics applications and managing clusters and storage infrastructure. John also worked as a Senior HPC System Administrator and later as the Lead Systems Administrator at Utah State University from August 1997 to July 2008.

John Hanks attended Stephen F. Austin State University from 1987 to 1993 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology/Combined Sciences. John then pursued further education at Stephen F. Austin State University from 1994 to 1995, obtaining a Master of Science degree in Biology/Applied Statistics. John completed their education at Utah State University from 1996 to 2000, studying Biology and Computer Science but did not attain a degree.
