Talha Karim

Mr. Karim has over 25 years of experience in Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and Asset & Liability Management (ALM) in banking sector. He has worked in both developed and emerging markets, leading and implementing comprehensive and effective Enterprise Risk-wide and ALM frameworks, ensuring all risks are effectively managed within the defined risk appetite; taking into consideration the economic and regulatory challenges. In addition, he has successfully managed key initiatives related to process reengineering, strategic project management and risk transformation.

In 1997, Mr. Karim commenced his career in Risk Management in Canada with Bank of Montreal and then joined Toronto Dominion Bank. He later moved to Bank ABC, Bahrain where he occupied different positions. In 2009, he joined CIB as the Head of ALM and in 2011 moved to Risk as Head of ERM with the mandate to expand and transform the area into a comprehensive function as per best practice which was successfully achieved.

In 2022, he was appointed as Acting Chief Risk Officer with duties that include enhancing CIB’s integrated ERM framework for all key risk areas, as well as credit risk in institutional, consumer and business banking, market, liquidity and interest rate risks. In addition to non-financial risks including operational, third-party, technology, reputation, and social & environmental. Mr. Karim is a member of the Bank’s Management Committee and other key senior committees.

Mr. Karim received a Masters of International Business in Finance from the University of San Diego, California, USA. and holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Arizona State University, Arizona, USA. Additionally, and holds the following certifications: QRD (Qualified Risk Director®), DCRO (Directors & Chief Risk Officers) Institute, USA; GAICD (Graduate Australian Institute of Company Directors), AICD, Australia; ISO 31000 Risk Manager, PECB, Canada and the ACI (Association Cambiste Internationale) Diploma, UK.
