FRENCH POLYNESIA REEF RESTORATION MANAGER

FULL-TIME POSITION

THE JOB

Coral Gardeners is seeking a restoration manager to manage our coral reef restoration efforts. This includes planning, coordinating, and organizing our reef restoration work in French Polynesia, managing multiple teams of coral gardeners, and ensuring compliance with local regulation. The ideal candidate is from French Polynesia (ideally Moorea), speaks Tahitian, French and English, and has experience working in the region, interacting with local government, and has experience writing reports and submitting government forms and applications. 

A love of the ocean and ability to work in the water are required. A degree in marine science and hands-on experience in coral reef restoration are additional, but not necessary qualifications.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Team management
    • Directing the reef restoration team in Moorea to conduct in-water reef restoration
    • Coordinating the work and budget of the field teams across French Polynesia
    • Training coral gardeners to become reef restoration managers
    • Develop the scope of works, budgets, and timelines for new reef restoration sites in collaboration with the international development team
  • Field operations
    • Conducting coral reef health assessments and consulting local communities to prioritize restoration sites
    • Setting up in-water nurseries, including obtaining relevant permits and materials
    • Selecting coral species and individuals to ensure species/genetic biodiversity and climate resilience in coordination with the Director of Science
    • Defining transplantation methods that are suitable for local reef conditions in coordination with the Director of Science
    • Working closely with the restoration managers at our Fiji and Thailand branches to apply new methods that improve restoration efficiency and success
    • Coordinate the monitoring of  corals in nurseries and at outplant sites to determine their size, health, and survival rate, and work with the Director of Science to adapt the restoration strategy based on those insights
    • Ensure safety of the in-water operations
  • Relationship management
    • Maintaining a good professional relationship with various government agencies

    • Writing quarterly/annual reports to share with funders, partners, and agencies

WORK QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working and living in French Polynesia
  • Experience managing a field team
  • Experience handling French Polyensian regulatory paperwork
  • Fluent in French and English and Tahitian
  • Ideally, a Masters degree in relevant discipline (e.g. marine science, environmental management, biology, coral reef ecology)
  • Ideally, hands-on coral reef restoration experience
