Continuing their education, Cleland went on to the University of Maryland from 1992 to 1995, where they completed their Bachelor's degree in Government and Politics. After a brief hiatus, they attended Brooklyn College from 2003 to 2004 for general studies. Finally, Cleland pursued a Master's degree in Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 2006 to 2009, which was pending at the time.
